Get Relief from Inflammation That Limits Shoulder Movement
Shoulder bursitis and tendonitis are two common causes of pain and irritation in the shoulder joint. Both involve inflammation in soft tissues that support movement and stability. While they often respond to early treatment, chronic or severe cases may require surgical care.
At Michigan Orthopedic Center, our orthopedic surgeons evaluate the root cause of your shoulder pain and guide you through the right treatment plan. If inflammation leads to persistent pain or limited motion, we offer advanced procedures to restore comfort and prevent long-term damage.
Understanding Bursitis and Tendonitis
Bursitis occurs when the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder joint, becomes inflamed. Tendonitis is inflammation in the tendons that connect muscle to bone, especially in the rotator cuff. Both conditions can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness.
You may have bursitis or tendonitis if you notice:
- Pain when lifting your arm or reaching overhead
- Shoulder stiffness or tenderness
- Swelling in the front or side of the shoulder
- Pain that worsens at night or after activity
- Weakness or fatigue in the arm

What Causes These Conditions
These conditions are typically caused by overuse, repetitive motion, or poor posture. Athletes and active adults are more likely to experience them, but they can affect anyone.
Diagnosing Shoulder Inflammation at Michigan Orthopedic Center
Your orthopedic provider will evaluate your symptoms and perform a physical exam. Imaging, such as X-rays or ultrasound, may be used to rule out other causes of pain, such as arthritis or tears.

Surgical Care When Needed
Our orthopedic surgeons specialize in arthroscopic techniques that use small incisions to treat shoulder inflammation with minimal disruption. This may include a bursectomy (removal of inflamed bursa) or tendon debridement for damaged tissue.
Recovery and Results
Most patients recover with rest, therapy, and a gradual return to activity. If surgery is needed, recovery may involve a short period in a sling followed by physical therapy. Many patients return to full use of their shoulder within a few months.
Treatment Options for Bursitis and Tendonitis
Mild cases often respond well to conservative treatments, such as:
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy to restore movement and reduce strain
- Activity changes to avoid irritating the joint
If symptoms don’t improve or imaging reveals structural problems, our surgeons may recommend minimally invasive procedures to remove inflamed tissue, repair irritated tendons, or address any underlying impingement.
