SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY

Minimally Invasive Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat a wide range of shoulder problems through small incisions. It offers less pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

At Michigan Orthopedic Center, our fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons use shoulder arthroscopy to treat painful conditions that have not improved with non-surgical care. This advanced approach allows for precise treatment while preserving healthy tissue and supporting long-term shoulder function.

Conditions Treated with Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy may be recommended to treat:

  • Impingement Syndrome – When tendons or soft tissue are pinched during movement, causing pain or weakness
  • SLAP (Labral) Tears – Injuries to the top part of the shoulder labrum, often caused by throwing or overhead activity
  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) – Stiffness and limited motion caused by thickening of the joint capsule
  • Shoulder Dislocations – Recurrent dislocations or instability often caused by torn ligaments or labral damage

Arthroscopy can also be used to remove bone spurs, repair rotator cuff tears, or smooth out damaged cartilage.

What to Expect During the Procedure

This surgery is typically done under regional or general anesthesia. Your surgeon will:

  • Make two to three small incisions
  • Insert a small camera (arthroscope) to view the joint
  • Use miniature instruments to treat the damaged tissue

Because the incisions are small, there is less trauma to the surrounding structures and a quicker recovery compared to open procedures.
