Relieving Swelling and Discomfort at the Tip of the Elbow
Elbow bursitis occurs when the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the point of your elbow, becomes inflamed. This condition often causes noticeable swelling and tenderness at the back of the elbow, and it can result from repetitive pressure, trauma, or infection.
At Michigan Orthopedic Center, our orthopedic specialists evaluate the underlying cause of your elbow bursitis and provide targeted treatment. When symptoms do not improve with conservative care, surgical options are available to relieve discomfort and prevent complications.
What Causes Elbow Bursitis?
The olecranon bursa sits just under the skin at the tip of the elbow. It allows smooth movement between the bone and soft tissue.
When this sac becomes irritated or injured, it can fill with fluid and become inflamed.
Common causes include:
- Leaning on hard surfaces for long periods
- Repetitive elbow motion or overuse
- A direct hit or fall onto the elbow
- An infection that enters through a cut or puncture
- Certain medical conditions, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis
Symptoms of Elbow Bursitis
You may have elbow bursitis if you notice:
- Swelling over the point of the elbow
- Pain or tenderness when resting on the elbow
- Redness or warmth in the area
- Restricted motion if the swelling is severe
- Signs of infection, such as fever or drainage

How We Diagnose Elbow Bursitis at Michigan Orthopedic Center
Your provider will examine the elbow and may order imaging such as X-rays or an ultrasound to rule out fractures or other joint conditions. If infection is suspected, a sample of fluid may be taken from the bursa for testing.
Treatment Options for Elbow Bursitis
In most cases, non-surgical treatment is effective and may include:
- Rest and avoidance of pressure on the elbow
- Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medication
- Elbow pads or compression wraps
- Drainage of excess fluid with a needle (aspiration)
- Antibiotics if an infection is present

Surgical Treatment When Needed
If the bursitis becomes chronic, keeps coming back, or is infected and does not respond to antibiotics, your surgeon may recommend a bursectomy. This is a minor procedure that removes the inflamed bursa through a small incision.
Surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and most patients return to normal activity after a short recovery.
