Understanding the Problem and Your Treatment Options
Rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that helps lift and rotate your arm. It also keeps the shoulder stable. When this tissue is injured, even simple movements like reaching overhead, lifting a bag, or getting dressed can become painful.
At Michigan Orthopedic Center, our orthopedic surgeons treat rotator cuff injuries with both non-surgical and surgical options. We focus on relieving your pain, restoring your shoulder function, and helping you return to the activities you enjoy.

Signs You Might Have a Rotator Cuff Injury
Rotator cuff problems can happen suddenly, like from a fall, or develop slowly over time due to repeated use. You may have a rotator cuff injury if you notice:
- Pain when lifting your arm or reaching behind your back
- Weakness or difficulty holding objects at shoulder height
- A clicking or popping sound in your shoulder
- Pain that keeps you up at night or makes it hard to sleep
- Difficulty with routine activities like dressing, carrying groceries, or brushing your hair
How We Find Out What’s Going On
To diagnose the problem, your Michigan Orthopedic Center provider will examine your shoulder, ask about your symptoms, and order imaging tests like an X-ray or MRI.
These tests help us see if you have a partial or complete tear, inflammation, or other damage to the rotator cuff.
What Are Your Treatment Options?
For mild or early-stage injuries, we often start with non-surgical care. This may include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain
- Physical therapy to strengthen the shoulder and improve motion
If your pain does not improve, or imaging shows a torn tendon, surgery may be the best way to restore shoulder function and prevent further damage.

Surgical Repair for Rotator Cuff Injuries
Our fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons perform rotator cuff repair using minimally invasive arthroscopy. This procedure uses small incisions and a camera to view and repair the torn tendon. In more complex cases, we may recommend open surgery or tendon transfer.
Surgery is typically done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day.
What to Expect After Surgery
You will wear a sling for a short time to protect the shoulder.
Physical therapy usually begins within a few weeks to help you regain movement and strength.
Full recovery can take several months, but most patients return to work, hobbies, and sports with much less pain and better shoulder control.
Is Rotator Cuff Surgery Right for You?
If shoulder pain is interfering with your daily life and other treatments haven’t worked, rotator cuff repair may help you regain function and avoid further injury.
